Why are post caps so important for wooden fences?

Wood is a natural material that ‘works’. The weakest point of any wooden post is the top end, known as the end grain. This is where the tree’s capillaries are open – much like a straw.

Without a fence post cap, rainwater penetrates unhindered into the interior of the post. The water accumulates, freezes in winter and creates a warm, damp environment in summer. The result: the wood rots from the inside out, fungi form and the post becomes unstable. A high-quality post cap acts like a roof: it safely drains water away and extends the life of your fence by many years.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about post caps (FAQ)

Here we answer the most important questions about selection and installation.

➔ Which post cap fits my post?

A precise fit is crucial. Measure the top of your wooden post accurately. Our caps are designed to have minimal play so they can be easily slipped on but sit securely.

  • Post cap 7x7 cm (71x71 mm): Ideal for lightweight fences, front garden fences and hunter fences.
  • Post cap 9x9 cm (91x91 mm): The standard for privacy fences, pergolas and carports.
  • Post cap 10x10 cm (101x101 mm): For heavier structures and gate posts.
  • Post cap 12x12 cm (121x121 mm): For solid timber posts, often used for heavy-duty carports or patio canopies.

➔ Which material is best for me?

We stock three high-quality variants which, unlike plastic, are extremely durable and shatterproof:

  • V2A stainless steel: The premium solution. You can choose between polished (glossy) or brushed (matt). Stainless steel does not rust and still looks like new even after years – perfect for modern architecture.
  • Hot-dip galvanised steel: The best value for money. The galvanisation makes the steel extremely resistant to corrosion. This rustic look goes perfectly with classic wooden fences in a country house style.
  • Anthracite (RAL 7016): The trendsetter. These caps are powder-coated and match perfectly in colour with modern double-bar fences or dark-stained wood.

➔ How are post caps fixed in place?

Installation is incredibly simple and can be done quickly even by amateurs. Our caps have two drill holes on the sides. Slide the cap onto the post and screw it in place at the sides using suitable screws (preferably roofing screws or stainless steel screws).

Pro tip: Do not seal the cap completely with silicone! A small air gap is important so that any condensation that may form can evaporate again (‘chimney effect’). The side screw fastening is entirely sufficient for a secure hold.

➔ What does ‘pyramid shape’ mean?

Most of our caps have a pyramid shape. This is not just a design choice, but has a technical reason: The sloping sides allow rainwater and snow to run off immediately in all four directions. No water remains pooled on the cap.

Our money-saving tip: Are you planning a larger project? Make use of our handy sets of 10 for all sizes (70x70 mm to 120x120 mm) and benefit from low unit prices whilst maintaining the same top quality.
