90° pipe elbow, Type 5: Long radius for maximum flow

When flow efficiency and wear protection are top priorities, the standard elbow is often not sufficient. The 90° pipe elbow, Type 5 (also known as Type 5D), is characterised by its particularly long radius. With r ≈ 2.5 times the outer diameter, the bend is significantly more pronounced than in the standard elbow. At FeNau GmbH, you can obtain these special fittings made from seamless steel in the raw state – the perfect solution for demanding piping systems.

Type 5 vs. Type 3: What is the difference?

The difference lies in the geometry. Whilst a standard elbow (Type 3) redirects the medium relatively abruptly (radius = 1.5 x diameter), the Type 5 pipe elbow guides the medium gently around the corner (radius = 2.5 x diameter).

  • Lower pressure loss: The wide bend results in less turbulence. Pump capacity can often be reduced.
  • Less wear: In pipes conveying abrasive media (e.g. granules, sand, slurries), the long radius significantly reduces impact on the pipe wall.
  • Easier cleaning: Pipelines suitable for pigging benefit from the wide radius.

Ideal for industry, conveyor technology and design

In addition to technical pipework (e.g. for compressed air or hydraulics), the long-radius steel elbow is also often used for other purposes: in design and railing construction, the wide curve creates a completely different, very elegant look that stands out from standard designs. As we supply the elbow in raw (untreated) steel, you have complete freedom in further processing – whether welding, painting or galvanising.

Frequently asked questions about Type 5 bends (long radius)

When should I choose Type 5 instead of Type 3?

Opt for Type 5 if you need to maintain a high flow velocity without losing pressure, or if the material inside the pipe is abrasive (risk of abrasion). For purely static structures (railings), it is a matter of the desired appearance (wide curve).

Are Type 5 bends standardised?

Yes, these products comply with DIN 2605 Part 2 and the current EN 10253 (Type 5D). Dimensional accuracy and wall thickness are precisely defined, making them perfect for professional plant engineering.

How much space does a 90° Type 5 bend require?

Allow for significantly more space than with the standard type. Rule of thumb: The overall dimension (centre to end) is 2.5 times the pipe diameter. A 42.4 mm elbow therefore has a projection of over 100 mm (compared to approx. 60 mm for Type 3).
