90° pipe bend, Type 2: The space-saving solution with a short radius

Space is often at a premium in engine rooms, compact systems and railing construction. If the standard bend protrudes too far, the 90° pipe bend Type 2 from FeNau is the solution. With its particularly short radius (r ≈ 1.0 x outer diameter), it enables extremely tight 90-degree bends without compromising on the stability of a seamless steel bend.

What does “Type 2” mean and when do I need it?

The standards (DIN 2605 Part 1 / EN 10253) distinguish pipe bends primarily by their bending radius. Whilst the standard bend (Type 3) has a radius of 1.5 times the diameter, the Type 2 pipe bend is designed to be significantly more compact:

  • Type 2 radius: r ≈ 1.0 x D (The bend is as “short” as the pipe diameter itself).
  • Advantage: Maximum space saving in piping and structures.
  • Material: Raw steel (black), ideal for direct welding.

Ideal for FeNau customers: handrail construction and structural work

Particularly with handrails or frame constructions, a bend with a wide radius often looks out of place or protrudes too far into the space. Our short welded bends create a crisp, tight look (’Hamburger bend’ style) and are popular with metalworkers for routing pipes closely along walls or machinery. As the steel is supplied untreated, it can be welded perfectly to the connecting pipe and subsequently galvanised or coated.

Frequently asked questions about 90° short-radius bends (Type 2)

Does the short radius have any disadvantages in terms of flow?

Due to physical properties, the flow resistance with a short radius (Type 2) is slightly higher than with a standard elbow (Type 3), as the medium is directed round the corner ‘faster’. This is irrelevant for structures (railings), but should be taken into account in pump planning for water pipes.

Are these bends standardised?

Yes, our products comply with the tolerances of DIN 2605-1 and the European standard EN 10253. You receive verified dimensional accuracy for clean weld seams.

How do I calculate the space required?

As a rule of thumb for Type 2: The construction radius (centre of pipe to end of bend) corresponds approximately to the outer diameter. A 42.4 mm pipe therefore has a Type 2 bend with a radius of approx. 42–43 mm. This is extremely compact compared to the approx. 60 mm of a standard bend.
