180° pipe bend, Type 3: The double bend for perfect turns

When a pipe run needs to change direction completely or a handrail requires a clean finish, the 180° pipe bend, Type 3, is the professional solution. Often referred to as a double bend, U-bend or reverse bend, this component enables a 180-degree turn in the tightest of spaces. At FeNau GmbH, you can obtain these seamless steel fittings in the tried-and-tested Type 3 (standard radius) and in a raw finish – perfect for further welding work.

Type 3 for 180° bends: What do I need to bear in mind?

The standard for Type 3 (DIN 2605 / EN 10253) also applies to double bends, which means a radius of approx. 1.5 times the outer diameter. However, a different dimension is crucial for planning your design: the centre-to-centre distance (the distance between the centres of the two pipe ends).

  • Rule of thumb: The centre-to-centre distance is approx. 3 x the pipe diameter.
  • Example: For a 42.4 mm pipe (1 ¼ inch), the distance between the pipe centres is approx. 120–128 mm.
  • Advantage: This standardised distance ensures parallel pipe runs, which is particularly important when constructing heating coils or double handrails.

Applications: From railings to heat exchangers

Our customers in the trades and industry use the 180-degree welded elbow in a variety of ways:

  • Railing construction: As an elegant, injury-free finish (‘loop’) at the end of a handrail.
  • Plant engineering: As a deflection bend in pipework to reverse the flow of media.
  • Heat engineering: For the construction of pipe coils, coils and heat exchangers.

As we supply the steel elbow in its raw (black) state, you can weld it directly onto your structure and then have it galvanised or coated as a single component.

Frequently asked questions about 180° U-bends (FAQ)

Can I cut the 180° elbow to size?

Yes, as the steel is highly weldable, you can easily cut the bend to size (e.g. with an angle grinder or band saw), if, for example, you only need a 135° or 160° bend or wish to adjust the leg length.

Why can’t I find any “welded” 180° bends?

Due to the significant deformation involved, 180° bends are manufactured almost exclusively as seamless pipe bends. This ensures that the material does not tear on the inside (compression) or outside (tension). At FeNau, you therefore receive the highest industrial quality.

How do I protect the double bend from rust?

As the product is supplied as raw steel, it is susceptible to rust. It is intended as a "semi-finished product". Corrosion protection (painting, galvanising) is usually only applied once you have finished welding the bend into your railing or installation.
