For optimised flow conditions and generous radii: discover our 90° stainless steel pipe bends, Type 5 (DIN 2605 / EN 10253 Type 5D). These welded fittings are characterised by their particularly wide radius ($r \approx 2.5 \times d$) and reduce friction losses in piping to a minimum.

The geometry: Type 5 (Type 5D) explained

Unlike the standard (Type 3), this elbow is significantly more elongated. This ensures smoother transitions.

The radius comparison

Type 3 (standard): $r \approx 1.5 \times d$ (e.g. for a 42.4 mm pipe = approx. 63.5 mm radius).
Type 5 (here): $r \approx 2.5 \times d$ (e.g. for a 42.4 mm pipe = approx. 107 mm radius).

Planning note: This elbow requires significantly more space during installation, but offers technical and visual advantages in return.

When should Type 5 be used?

The wide radius is no coincidence, but meets specific technical requirements:

1. Flow dynamics

The gentle curve drastically reduces flow resistance (zeta value). This means:

Lower pressure loss in the pipe.
Less turbulence and material erosion.
Ideal for pneumatic conveying lines (granules, powder) or high-speed systems.

2. Design & Architecture

Architects like to use Type 5 as a stylistic device:

Creates a ‘soft’, elegant line for handrails.
Appears less technical/angular than the standard bend.
Often used in high-quality yacht railings or furniture designs.

Available versions

We offer Type 5 bends as pure welded fittings (for welding) in the following variants:

Materials: V2A (1.4307) for standard applications and V4A (1.4404) for corrosive environments.
