Flat steel bars (S235JR) – versatile bar stock for metal construction and design

Flat bars are among the most important basic profiles in metal construction: they are straight, dimensionally stable and can be used in countless projects as load-bearing or decorative elements. The FeNau range includes flat bars made of S235JR steel (uncoated) in various dimensions and finishes – from classic structural flat steel to decorative profiles with texture. This makes flat bar suitable for both functional structures and visually sophisticated wrought iron and fencing projects.

Applications

Flat bars are typically used wherever you need robust, straight profiles for assembly, joining or reinforcement. Thanks to the wide range of shapes and finishes, flat bars can also be specifically used as design elements.

  • Balustrades & handrails: as infill bars, cross-braces or decorative accent strips – e.g. grooved profiles for a more premium look.
  • Fence & gate construction: as frame, decorative or reinforcement elements; textured variants enhance the classic wrought iron look.
  • General metalwork: as a universal profile, connecting plate, web or structural flat steel for stable structures.
  • Series production & jig construction: depending on the design, also as defined, repeatable components in the assembly of sub-assemblies.

Material: S235JR (uncoated) – proven for construction & further processing

The flat bars in the FeNau range are supplied as S235JR steel in an uncoated finish. For many applications in metal construction, this is precisely the advantage: the raw material is intended directly for further processing and can be flexibly adapted to project requirements (e.g. cutting to size, drilling, welding, edge finishing or surface treatment as required).

Finishes & surfaces – from functional to decorative

To ensure that flat bars are not only technically suitable but also visually appealing, FeNau offers various finishes:

  • Solid flat steel / structural steel: linear, universally applicable, ideal for stable base structures.
  • Grooved decorative profiles: e.g. double-grooved flat bars – popular in railing and fence construction where the appearance remains visible.
  • Hammered variants: flat bars with hammered edges for an ‘antique’ look and a handcrafted character.
  • Textured profiles: corrugated designs or decorative flat bars with a riveted look as a design upgrade for classic metalwork.
  • Wide flat steel: larger cross-sections (e.g. 60×8) for applications where greater material thickness or contact area is required.

Dimensions & lengths – suitable for planning in fencing and metalwork

The range includes standard cross-sections such as 30×6, 30×8 or 40×8, as well as decorative variants (e.g. grooved, corrugated or hammered). Many items are available in practical bar lengths, often 3000 mm – some variants are also longer (e.g. 3300 mm for hammered edges). This allows you to plan balustrade panels, gate frames or fence elements efficiently and construct them in a manner appropriate to the material.

Practical tips for selection

  • For load-bearing applications: choose solid, smooth flat steel or suitable material thicknesses for frames, crossbars and reinforcements.
  • For visible areas: use grooved, hammered or textured profiles – this creates a higher-quality appearance and emphasises the wrought-iron character.
  • For a classic look on the fence: decorative profiles (e.g. rivet-effect) create a handcrafted look without complicating the construction.
